The following work is from the Intro to Studio Art class I taught at SUNY New Paltz to students ranging from freshman to senior year. We worked on various projects during the semester including a portrait project, a collage project, and a printmaking project.
Portrait Project: The purpose of this project was to learn how to draw through observation using the support of the grid system. The goal of this project is to allow students to try out various drawing materials as they see what suits them best. We started off with graphite pencil, and moved into a more gestural approach using charcoal. We also explored the use of oil pastels and watercolors within our practice.
Collage Project Part 1: The first step of this project was to familiarize students with the materials and process of collage by recreating a portion of a painting from the Modernest Movement.
Collage Project Part 2: The second part of this project focuses equally on assemblage and drawing. This project is to help students learn to trust their artistic instincts. Starting by finding an image that engages them, students must expand on them in an intuitive fashion. Students started off responding to color and pattern and brought more formal imagery into the project later on.

Printmaking: Students were asked to transform a memory into a print. After finishing initial prints students were asked to go back in with drawing materials to enhance the prints.
